Day 1 – Kids Sports Summit
The first day of the Kids Sports Summit was filled with fun, fervor, and curiosity. We kicked off the session with Anand Menezes, our first speaker of the day. Anand is an Olympian and manager of Indian Elite Athletes. He talked about the long, arduous journey he had to take to achieve his goals. His keen skill in decision-making helped him grab opportunities that assisted him in achieving his dream of participating on the biggest platform an athlete could dream of, the Olympics. His feats and achievements, like the fact that at one point he ran even faster than Milkha Singh, were a great source of inspiration and awe for all the attendees.
After Anand, the stage was taken up by Nikil Latey. Nikhil has worked with several popular sportspersons like Mary Kom and others. It’s a popular belief that kids should seriously start to train for a sport when they are of 3-12 years of age. However, according to Nikhil, Former Head of Sports Science at Olympic Gold Quest, the main focus of this should be on the learning process and exploring new avenues of sports rather than focusing on specialization. At such an early age, the physiology of kids is extremely impressionable so it’s better if one focuses on trying and participating in multiple sports at a time. His crucial insight into the world of multisport and kids training was a huge eye-opener for numerous parents.
Next up was Benjamin Hart, a yoga instructor from Rainbow Yoga. Benjamin’s energetic and outgoing personality turned this into an interactive Power-packed engaging yoga session for kids and parents alike. He showed various asanas for parents that they could practice with their kids at home. It was extremely heart-warming to see kids interact and learn about yoga in such a unique manner, from an exceptionally gifted person. Everyone’s love for this session was unanimous.
The last session of the day was on the topic of Nutrition and was taken by Shifra Varadkar. She discussed techniques that parents can incorporate to deal with the habit of picky eating amongst their children. In today’s age of processed food and fast food, inculcating a healthy eating habit in children is of utmost importance. She also talked about making the daily, home-cooked food more interesting and nutritious, especially for children. As these topics are extremely important for a child’s growth and development, parents naturally had plenty of doubts that Shifra was able to clear.
And so, the first day of the Kids Sports Summit came to end. The summit was an amazing educational experience that was able to burst numerous myths.
